What's actually going on with AI features on Windows

Windows now ships with AI built directly into the operating system — Copilot, Recall, AI suggestions across Office and the taskbar — on top of whatever third-party AI apps someone installs separately. That layering is exactly where the confusion starts: an AI feature acting strangely could be the built-in Windows one, a Microsoft 365 add-on, or an entirely separate app, and each has a different cause.

Because these are still relatively new features, they also change faster than most of Windows — appearing, moving, or being renamed between updates — which is part of why "AI stopped working" can mean something different every few months even when nothing else on the PC changed.

When AI-related problems tend to show up

• Right after a Windows or Microsoft 365 update, when an AI feature moves, gets renamed, or temporarily disappears
