⚡ ARM x64 Performance Issues
Last updated: November 26, 2025
Speed up x64 apps on ARM Windows PCs: switch to native ARM64 versions, tune Prism emulation, GPU acceleration and memory, and cut battery drain.
Not sure this is your exact issue? Every WindowsHelper guide is scoped to one specific problem — not a generic troubleshooting checklist — so if the title above matches what you're seeing, this is the right guide.
What's different about apps on an ARM-based PC
Newer Windows PCs built on ARM chips — the kind marketed as “Copilot+” or built around Snapdragon processors — use a fundamentally different chip design than most PCs sold over the last few decades. An app written specifically for that older, more common chip design doesn't automatically run natively on an ARM chip; unless it's been rebuilt for ARM, it runs through a translation layer that converts its instructions on the fly. That translation step is what can show up as sluggishness, stuttering, or odd little glitches in a specific app, even on a perfectly capable PC.
It's a different pattern from a PC simply being slow all over — apps already built for ARM run at full native speed, so what you usually notice is one or two specific apps behaving oddly while everything else, including Windows itself, feels normal.
Signs an app is running through translation, not natively
- One particular app feels sluggish or stutters while other apps on the same PC feel completely normal
- The slowdown doesn't match how fast the PC otherwise feels — starting up, browsing, switching windows are all quick
- It's worse in one specific game or piece of software than in everyday apps
- It started right after switching to a newer ARM-based laptop, not something that crept up gradually
How serious is it?
Usually minor
A single sluggish app on an otherwise fast ARM PC is usually a compatibility mismatch, not anything wrong with the machine — low stakes.
Worth taking seriously
If a lot of the apps you use daily are affected, it's worth working out the pattern before relying on this PC for anything demanding.
Why “just update everything” isn't the whole story
Updating apps and drivers is the reflexive advice, and it genuinely helps when a native ARM version of that app already exists to update to — but if a particular app simply hasn't been built for ARM yet, no update changes the fact that it's still running through translation underneath.
Telling whether a specific app already runs natively on ARM, or is still relying on translation, and what that means for how it behaves on your machine, is what WindowsHelper is being built to help work out — instead of updating everything and hoping one of the apps was the culprit.
