What it means when your mailbox isn't syncing

This is different from mail that won't send or receive at all, and different again from an account rejecting your sign-in — here, the mail exists and is already sitting on the server or showing on your phone, but the app on this particular PC hasn't caught up to reflect it. Folders look out of date, unread counts are stale, or messages you can see elsewhere just aren't showing up here yet.

Syncing is the ongoing background job of the app checking the server and mirroring what's there. When that mirroring stalls, the problem is the app's view being behind, not that the mail itself has gone missing or that anything failed to send.

Occasional lag between what's on the server and what the app shows, that eventually catches up, is common and low-risk — nothing is actually missing.

Common questions

Is this the same as email not sending or receiving at all?
No — that's about messages failing to move at all. This is about mail that already exists elsewhere not yet showing up in this particular app's view.
Could this be a sign-in problem?
Usually not, if the app opens and signs in without any prompt — sign-in trouble tends to show its own distinct error rather than just stale-looking folders.
Why does one folder update while another one doesn't?
That's a useful clue — it points toward something specific to that folder's sync, rather than the whole account being broken.
Am I missing mail permanently?
