Fix Dark Mode Accessibility Issues - Step-by-step fix guide
Not sure this is your exact issue? Every WindowsHelper guide is scoped to one specific problem — not a generic troubleshooting checklist — so if the title above matches what you're seeing, this is the right guide.
Why dark mode can create its own readability problems
Dark mode is meant to be easier on the eyes, but it doesn't automatically mean everything stays readable — some text and interface elements are designed with an assumption of a light background, and when dark mode flips things around, the contrast between text and its background can end up worse rather than better in specific spots, even though the overall theme looks fine.
It's also inconsistent across apps in a way that light mode often isn't, because not every app fully supports dark mode the same way — so you can end up with some windows following the theme cleanly and others staying stubbornly light, or displaying a jarring mix of the two.
How to tell it's this
- Some text is genuinely hard to read against its background in dark mode specifically
- Certain apps stay in light mode while the rest of the system follows dark mode
- Icons or interface elements look inconsistent or hard to make out with dark mode on
- Contrast that felt fine in light mode feels straining in dark mode
How serious is it?
Usually minor
Dark mode readability issues are a comfort and accessibility matter, not a risk to your PC or files — and it's a preference you're fully in control of.
Worth taking seriously
If the readability problem is genuinely affecting how usable specific apps are for you, it's worth treating as more than just an aesthetic quirk.
Why “just turn it off” misses the point
Switching back to light mode does sidestep the problem, but if dark mode is genuinely more comfortable for you overall — easier on the eyes, better for low light — losing it entirely because of a handful of readability spots is trading one discomfort for another rather than actually solving anything.
The better path is addressing the specific contrast or consistency problems within dark mode, so you get its benefits without the readability trade-offs. Identifying exactly where dark mode is falling short for you and guiding the fix is what WindowsHelper is being built to do.
