Why contacts are trickier to keep in sync than they look

Your contacts often live in more than one place at once — an email account, a phone's own address book, an app that pulls from both — and keeping a single person's details consistent across all of them depends on each connection actually syncing properly, in the right direction, without conflicting changes overwriting each other. A contact edited in one place doesn't automatically mean every other place learns about that edit.

It gets more tangled with duplicates: the same person can end up as two or three separate entries because they were added slightly differently in different places, and syncing doesn't automatically merge those — it can just as easily multiply them further if the sync itself isn't behaving correctly.

Done properly, no — the goal is getting the same, correct information to line up everywhere, not removing entries you actually want to keep.
Why do duplicates keep coming back after I delete them?
If the sync between your accounts is what's creating them, deleting the duplicate without addressing that sync just means the same mismatch can produce another one later.
Is this the same problem as calendar events not syncing?
It's a related but separate kind of sync issue — contacts and calendars sync through different mechanisms even within the same account, so one working correctly doesn't guarantee the other does too.
