π¦ Fix Error 0xc0000005 Access Violation
Last updated: October 9, 2025
Resolve access violation crashes, memory errors, and application exceptions that crash programs
Not sure this is your exact issue? Every WindowsHelper guide is scoped to one specific problem β not a generic troubleshooting checklist β so if the title above matches what you're seeing, this is the right guide.
What an 0xc0000005 access violation means
Error 0xc0000005 means a program tried to read or write to a part of your PC's memory it wasn't allowed to touch, and Windows stopped it immediately rather than letting it continue β which is a safety measure, not the program doing something intentionally wrong. The crash is Windows's way of preventing that mistake from causing a bigger problem elsewhere.
This code is generic in the sense that many different underlying situations can trigger it β a program with a genuine flaw, a conflict between two pieces of software both trying to use the same memory, or a driver misbehaving β and the code alone doesn't say which of those is happening on your PC.
How to tell it's this specific error
- The code 0xc0000005 appears in a crash message, often alongside the words βaccess violationβ
- One particular program crashes with this code repeatedly, while others run fine
- It happens at a consistent moment β opening the program, or doing a specific action within it
- The rest of the PC keeps working normally; it's isolated to that one program crashing
How serious is it?
Usually minor
A single program crashing occasionally with this code is common and usually low-risk to your PC as a whole.
Worth taking seriously
If it's happening across several unrelated programs, or alongside other instability, that's a stronger signal worth looking into rather than one-off program trouble.
Why reinstalling the one program doesn't always help
People often jump straight to reinstalling the crashing program, and sometimes that clears it β but if the real cause is a conflict with something else on the PC, or a driver rather than the program itself, reinstalling the same program just puts an unchanged piece back into the same conflict.
Working out whether the program, a conflict, or something underneath it is actually responsible is what WindowsHelper is being built to help sort through, rather than leaving reinstalling as the only thing to try.
