Fix Microsoft Teams Microphone & Camera Not Working
Last updated: April 7, 2026
Fix Teams microphone and camera not detected or not working. Covers Windows privacy permissions, device selection, physical mute checks, sound settings, and Teams cache clear.
Overview
Can't be heard or seen in Teams meetings? This guide fixes mic and camera issues through privacy settings, device selection, mute checks, and Teams cache reset.
What's behind Teams not detecting your microphone or camera
For Teams to use your microphone or camera, several things have to line up: Windows has to allow apps to access them, Teams has to be pointed at the correct device if you have more than one, and the hardware itself has to actually be available and not in use elsewhere. When Teams shows no camera, no microphone, or others can't hear or see you, one of those links in the chain isn't holding — even though the hardware itself is very often working just fine.
This is a narrower problem than Teams not working overall — signing in, chatting, and joining meetings can all work perfectly while it's specifically your camera or microphone that Teams can't reach, which points at device access rather than the app or your connection as a whole.
How to tell it's the camera or microphone specifically
- Teams opens and lets you join meetings fine, but shows no camera image or no microphone input
- Others in a call say they can't hear or see you, even though the meeting itself connected
- The camera or microphone works fine in a different app on the same PC
- It worked in Teams before and stopped after a Windows update or a permissions change
How serious is it?
Usually minor
A camera or microphone not showing up occasionally, especially right after joining, is a common hiccup and not a sign of hardware failure.
Worth taking seriously
If it's failing right before meetings you can't reschedule, it's worth testing ahead of time rather than discovering it live on a call.
Why restarting Teams doesn't always bring the camera back
Restarting the app resets a lot, and it helps when Teams itself just got into a confused state — but if the real problem is a permission Windows hasn't granted, or another app already holding onto the camera or microphone, restarting Teams changes none of that underlying access.
Working out whether it's a permission, a device conflict, or something specific to Teams itself that's blocking access on your PC, rather than restarting and hoping, is what WindowsHelper is being built to help sort out.
