Fix Mouse Cursor Disappeared or Invisible
Last updated: April 6, 2026
Fix disappeared mouse cursor with keyboard-only navigation instructions. Covers physical checks, touchpad re-enable, cursor settings, driver reinstall, and Explorer restart.
Overview
Cursor vanished? This guide helps you get it back using only your keyboard — covers touchpad toggles, hide-while-typing settings, driver fixes, and cursor scheme resets.
Where the cursor goes when it disappears
A mouse cursor that vanishes — the pointer's still moving if you nudge the mouse and things still respond to clicks, but there's nothing visible on screen to show where it is — usually means the cursor itself isn't being drawn, even though the mouse input underneath is still working perfectly fine. It's a rendering problem, not a mouse problem, and that distinction is the key to sorting it.
Because the cursor is drawn on top of everything else on screen, it depends on that drawing happening correctly in every app and situation — which is why it can vanish in one specific app while staying visible everywhere else, or disappear after a particular action like waking from sleep or switching between apps.
How to tell it's this
- The pointer is invisible but clicking and moving still work as expected
- It disappears in one specific app or game while staying visible elsewhere
- It vanishes after waking from sleep, after a full-screen app, or after connecting a second monitor
- Moving the mouse rapidly briefly reveals or restores it
How serious is it?
Usually minor
An invisible cursor is disorienting but low-stakes — the mouse itself is almost always working fine underneath, it's just not being shown.
Worth taking seriously
Not a “serious” issue as such — mostly just genuinely disruptive if you can't tell where your pointer is while trying to work.
Why swapping mice rarely helps
Because the mouse itself is usually working — moving and clicking just fine — trying a different mouse rarely changes anything, since the problem is in how (or whether) the cursor gets drawn, not in the input device sending the signal.
The reliable path is finding out where in the drawing chain the cursor is actually failing to show — a specific app, a display change, or something else entirely — and addressing that. Working that out and guiding the matching fix is what WindowsHelper is being built to do.
