Fix Network Share Access Denied Errors
Not sure this is your exact issue? Every WindowsHelper guide is scoped to one specific problem — not a generic troubleshooting checklist — so if the title above matches what you're seeing, this is the right guide.
What “access denied” on a shared folder means
Your PC can successfully find a shared folder on the network and still be turned away from opening it — those are two separate checks. The first is whether the two devices can talk to each other at all; the second, layered on top, is whether the specific account you’re signed in with is actually allowed into that folder. This error means the second check failed, even though the first one clearly worked.
That distinction matters because a lot of general troubleshooting focuses on the connection itself — when the connection is already fine here, and the real gap is who’s permitted in.
How to tell it’s a permission problem, not a connection one
- The shared folder shows up and can be seen, but opening it produces a denial
- It worked before and now suddenly refuses you specifically
- Another account on the same PC can get in, but yours can’t
- The error message specifically mentions permission or authorization, rather than “not found” or “unreachable”
How serious is it?
Usually minor
This is an access-control mismatch, not data loss — your files are sitting exactly where they were on the PC that’s sharing them.
Worth taking seriously
If this started right after a password change or an account change on the PC doing the sharing, that’s a strong clue worth keeping in mind.
Why this is a different problem than “can’t connect”
Because the connection between the two PCs is already working here, advice aimed at network connectivity — the usual first response to sharing trouble — doesn’t address what’s actually wrong. The block is happening one layer further in, at who’s allowed through, not whether the door can be found.
Recognizing that this is a permission mismatch rather than a connection failure, and matching the fix to that specific layer, is what WindowsHelper is being built to do.
