What's different about Outlook's own search breaking

This is distinct from the Start-menu search on Windows going wrong. Outlook keeps its own separate index just for your mail, calendar, and contacts, so it's entirely possible for Start search to work perfectly while searching inside Outlook comes up empty, or the other way around — they're two different lookup systems that happen to share the word “search.”

Because that index has to track a mailbox that keeps growing and changing, it can fall behind or get into a state where it only reflects some of what's actually in your mail, which produces search results that look incomplete rather than obviously broken.
