Fix Right-Click Context Menu Not Working
Last updated: March 28, 2026
Fix broken right-click menu, restore classic Windows 10 context menu, fix missing options, and identify bad shell extensions.
Not sure this is your exact issue? Every WindowsHelper guide is scoped to one specific problem — not a generic troubleshooting checklist — so if the title above matches what you're seeing, this is the right guide.
What's happening when right-click stops working
Right-clicking is supposed to bring up a short menu of things you can do — but when that menu doesn't appear, appears empty, freezes, or is missing options you expect, it usually means something Windows asks to build that menu is misbehaving. The menu itself isn't one fixed thing; Windows assembles it fresh each time from a mix of built-in options and extras added by other software.
That assembly process is exactly why the problem varies so much — a broken piece can make the whole menu freeze, make it look thinner than usual, or only affect right-clicking in certain places, depending on what's actually gone wrong.
How to tell it's this
- Right-clicking does nothing at all, anywhere
- The menu appears but is slow, freezes, or is missing options you used to see
- It happens everywhere, or only in certain folders or on certain files
- It started after installing a new program or an update
How serious is it?
Usually minor
A misbehaving right-click menu is a nuisance, not a risk — nothing about it touches your files, and it's usually a quick fix.
Worth taking seriously
If right-click freezing is accompanied by the wider desktop also acting up, the two may share a cause worth addressing together.
Why a factory reset is overkill here
People sometimes reach for drastic fixes when the menu keeps misbehaving, but the vast majority of the time it's one specific added piece causing the whole menu to choke — not something wrong with Windows itself.
The efficient path is finding which addition is actually the troublemaker on your PC, rather than resetting everything or guessing blindly. Spotting the real culprit and guiding the targeted fix is what WindowsHelper is being built to do.
