What's usually behind scanning trouble

Scanning involves an extra layer that plain printing doesn't: your PC not only has to find the scanner, it has to successfully pull an image back from it and hand that image to whatever software you're scanning into. A failure at any point in that chain — Windows not finding the scanner, the scan software not talking to it properly, or the image itself coming through poorly — produces a different flavor of “scanning doesn't work.”
