Fix Screen Brightness Not Adjusting
Last updated: March 5, 2025
Fix missing or greyed-out brightness slider, non-responsive brightness keys, and adaptive brightness issues on laptops and desktops.
Overview
Brightness slider missing or not working? This guide covers display driver fixes, adaptive brightness, monitor drivers, and Fn key configuration.
Why the brightness control stops responding
Brightness that won't budge — a slider that's greyed out, keys that do nothing, or a screen that dims and brightens on its own — usually means the path between “you asking for a brightness change” and “the screen actually changing” has broken somewhere. Windows, the screen, and (on laptops) an automatic light-sensing feature all have a say in the final brightness, and a mismatch between them can lock things in place or cause it to behave unpredictably.
That's why this problem shows up differently depending on the PC: a missing slider is a different symptom from a screen that changes brightness by itself, even though both fall under “brightness isn't working right.”
How to tell it's this
- The brightness slider is missing entirely, or greyed out and won't move
- Brightness keys on the keyboard do nothing
- The screen dims or brightens on its own, especially when the lighting around you changes
- Brightness resets to the same level every time you restart
How serious is it?
Usually minor
A stuck brightness control is a comfort issue, not a risk to your PC — annoying, especially at night, but low-stakes.
Worth taking seriously
Not really a “serious” category — though a screen that's stuck very dim can make it hard to see what you're doing, worth prioritising for that practical reason.
Why one setting rarely explains the whole thing
Because several different pieces influence the final brightness on a given PC, changing just one setting sometimes seems to have no effect at all, even though it did something — the outcome you actually see is the combined result, not any single control's doing.
Getting reliable, working brightness control back means understanding which of those pieces is actually misbehaving on your PC. Working that out and guiding the fix that addresses it is what WindowsHelper is being built to do.
