What's going on when an SD card or reader won't cooperate

An SD card that won't show up, a reader that seems dead, or a card that appears but says it's unreadable usually comes down to one of three separate things: the physical contact between card and reader, the reader itself not being recognized by Windows, or Windows seeing the card but not understanding what's stored on it. They all look like “nothing happens,” but they're genuinely different situations.

Card readers built into laptops add another wrinkle — they can stop being recognized as a whole, independent of any card you put in them, which is easy to mistake for a problem with the card itself.

Not right away — that message can appear even when the files are still recoverable, particularly if the reader or Windows is the real source of the confusion. It's worth checking that first.
