What causes a VPN to be set up wrong in the first place

A VPN connection needs several pieces of information to line up correctly before it can connect at all — the server address, the connection protocol, sometimes a certificate or specific credentials — and if any one of those is off, the VPN can fail to connect from the very start, rather than connecting and then dropping later. That's different from a VPN that connects fine but keeps disconnecting; here, the setup itself is the obstacle.

Common questions

Is this the VPN provider's fault or mine?
It can be either — sometimes a provider changes requirements without much notice, and sometimes a setting was entered incorrectly. Comparing notes with someone else on the same VPN helps tell which.
Why did it stop working when I didn't change anything?
The other end — your VPN provider or a work/school network — may have changed something on their side, which can break a setup that used to work without you touching it.
Is my connection secure while this is unresolved?
