📶 Fix Wi-Fi Mobile Hotspot Not Working
Last updated: January 11, 2025
Ensure hotspot is configured correctly
Not sure this is your exact issue? Every WindowsHelper guide is scoped to one specific problem — not a generic troubleshooting checklist — so if the title above matches what you're seeing, this is the right guide.
What’s happening when your mobile hotspot won’t work at all
A mobile hotspot turns your phone’s cellular data into a Wi-Fi signal other devices can join — your PC sees it like any other Wi-Fi network. When it won’t work at all — the hotspot won’t turn on, your PC can’t see it, or it connects but nothing loads — that’s a break somewhere in the chain between your phone’s cellular signal, the Wi-Fi network it’s broadcasting, and your PC’s own Wi-Fi settings.
It’s a different kind of problem from a hotspot that’s merely glitchy or interfered with by other devices — this is the hotspot connection not functioning at all, which usually traces to one specific link in that chain rather than the whole system being at fault.
How to tell this is what you’re dealing with
- Your phone’s hotspot won’t turn on, or turns off again right away
- Your PC can’t see the hotspot network in its Wi-Fi list at all
- It connects to the hotspot but nothing loads — no internet gets through
- It used to work and stopped, without another device being the obvious cause
How serious is it?
Usually minor
A hotspot that won’t connect is an inconvenience, not a risk — no files or settings are at stake, just your current internet access.
Worth taking seriously
If it’s your only way online right now, it’s worth treating as urgent for you, even though there’s no underlying danger to the PC or phone.
Why restarting everything doesn’t always bring it back
Restarting the phone or PC resets a lot of things at once, and sometimes that’s exactly what was needed — but a hotspot that won’t work at all can also come from a specific setting, a limit on the phone’s plan, or how the PC is trying to connect, and a restart doesn’t touch any of those directly.
Working out which specific link in the chain — phone, hotspot signal, or PC’s Wi-Fi settings — is actually the broken one, and fixing that, is what WindowsHelper is being built to guide you through instead of restarting and hoping.
