What it means when Wi-Fi networks don't show up in the list

This is a narrower situation than the Wi-Fi option disappearing entirely — here, Wi-Fi is still available as an option, your adapter is still recognized, but when you open the list of nearby networks, some or all of them just aren't there. Your PC still has the ability to see Wi-Fi networks; it's the actual scanning or listing part that isn't turning up what should be around.

This is different from the Wi-Fi adapter itself going missing, where the whole option to use Wi-Fi disappears. Here the option is present and the adapter is recognized — it's specifically the list of nearby networks that's incomplete or empty.
