πΆ Fix WiFi Adapter Missing or Disappearing
Last updated: December 15, 2025
Is your WiFi adapter gone from Device Manager? Did it vanish after a Windows Update? This frustrating issue has become more common - let's bring it back!
Not sure this is your exact issue? Every WindowsHelper guide is scoped to one specific problem β not a generic troubleshooting checklist β so if the title above matches what you're seeing, this is the right guide.
What it means when your Wi-Fi adapter disappears
Every wireless connection on your PC depends on a small piece of hardware β the Wi-Fi adapter β being recognized and made available to Windows so it can show up as an option at all. When that adapter goes missing, you don't just lose your current connection: the ability to see or choose any Wi-Fi network vanishes too, because Windows isn't detecting the piece of hardware needed to offer it.
This is a different situation from a Wi-Fi network that simply won't connect or keeps dropping β in those cases the adapter is still there and working, just having trouble with a specific connection. Here, the adapter itself has stopped being recognized, which points to something further upstream than any one network's settings.
Signs your adapter has actually disappeared
- Wi-Fi isn't listed as a connection option at all, not even a βno networks foundβ message
- It was there before β often after an update, a restart, or after using a wired connection for a while
- Wired (Ethernet) still works fine, or another device connects to the same Wi-Fi with no issue
- It sometimes comes back after a restart, only to disappear again later
How serious is it?
Usually minor
A Wi-Fi adapter that vanished after an update or driver change is usually a software-recognition issue, not hardware failure β low risk to your PC.
Worth taking seriously
If it disappeared alongside physical damage, or after the laptop was dropped or got wet, hardware wear is worth considering rather than assuming it's purely software.
Why restarting only sometimes brings it back
A missing adapter can come from Windows losing track of hardware it used to recognize, a driver that stopped loading properly, or occasionally the hardware itself β and a restart only fixes the first of those, which is why it works some of the time and not others.
Telling which of those is actually happening on your PC, rather than restarting repeatedly and hoping, is what WindowsHelper is being built to help sort out.
What this helps with
What to expect: Hard difficulty β’ usually about 15-30 minutes.
