What's going wrong when you can't get past the login screen

This covers getting stuck at login in a broader sense than a forgotten password — your credentials might be accepted, or accepted-looking, and you still can't reach the desktop: the screen hangs, spins indefinitely, signs you in and then signs you back out, or freezes partway through. That's a different situation from not remembering your PIN or password at all, and different again from a second-step code failing during two-factor sign-in — here, the sign-in process itself is the thing breaking down.

Because getting from the login screen to a working desktop involves several steps happening in sequence, a hang partway through can come from very different places depending on exactly where in that sequence things stall.
