Headphone Jack Not Working

Headphone Jack Not Working - Complete beginner-friendly guide with diagrams
Not sure this is your exact issue? Every WindowsHelper guide is scoped to one specific problem — not a generic troubleshooting checklist — so if the title above matches what you're seeing, this is the right guide.
What's happening when the headphone jack goes silent
Plugging headphones in and getting nothing — or sound still coming from the speakers instead — usually means your PC hasn't switched over to treat the jack as the active output. Most PCs are built to detect when something's plugged in and automatically redirect sound there, and when that detection doesn't fire correctly, the PC keeps sending audio to wherever it was going before.
That's a different problem from headphones that are actually damaged, and telling the two apart is the key first step — because the fix for “PC won't switch outputs” is nothing like the fix for “headphones themselves are faulty.”
How to tell it's this
- Sound keeps coming from the speakers even with headphones plugged in
- Nothing plays through the jack at all — no sound from either speakers or headphones
- Sound cuts in and out, or only comes from one ear
- It worked before and stopped after an update or being unplugged and replugged
How serious is it?
Usually minor
A jack not switching over is a settings matter, not a broken port — low-stakes and usually resolved without any hardware involved.
Worth taking seriously
If sound only comes from one ear no matter which headphones you use, or the jack feels loose or damaged, that leans toward a physical issue worth treating differently.
Why “try different headphones” only tells you half the story
Testing with a different pair of headphones is a good instinct, but it only rules out one possibility — the headphones themselves. If the real issue is your PC not switching to the jack correctly, a different pair of headphones will have exactly the same problem.
The complete answer is figuring out whether the PC's audio switching, the jack itself, or the headphones are the actual cause. Working through that and guiding the fix that matches is what WindowsHelper is being built to do, instead of leaving you swapping headphones.
