What a compressed file actually is

A compressed file — .zip, .rar, .7z, and similar formats — is a single file that’s actually a container holding one or more other files, squeezed down to take up less space and packaged so they can be shared or stored as one item instead of many. Before you can use what’s inside, that container has to be opened up, or “extracted,” which unpacks the original files back out in their normal, usable form.

Not all of these formats are treated the same by Windows: some are handled by tools built directly into Windows itself, while others need something extra to open properly, which is exactly why a file that looks similar to another can behave completely differently when you try to open it — one works immediately, another does nothing at all.
