What PowerPoint actually is

PowerPoint organizes what you want to say into a series of slides — text, images, and other elements laid out to be shown to an audience, one screen at a time. Unlike a document meant to be read start to finish on its own, a slide is built to be looked at for a moment while you talk, which changes what actually belongs on it.

Do I need design skills to make it look good?

Not really — PowerPoint has a lot of built-in help for layout and appearance, so a reasonable-looking result doesn’t depend on being a designer.

Is it easy to lose my work while I’m experimenting?

Not usually — your content stays as you’ve entered it, and most changes are easy to undo. The bigger risk is only in a file shared with others.

What’s the difference between PowerPoint and just writing it up in Word?

A Word document is meant to be read in detail on its own. A slide is meant to support something you’re saying out loud in the moment — that difference changes how much belongs on the screen at once.
