πΎ Recover Lost or Corrupted Files
Last updated: January 8, 2025
Recover lost or corrupted files from the Recycle Bin, previous versions, File History, Windows File Recovery, cloud backups or shadow copies.
Not sure this is your exact issue? Every WindowsHelper guide is scoped to one specific problem β not a generic troubleshooting checklist β so if the title above matches what you're seeing, this is the right guide.
What's really going on with a βlostβ or corrupted file
A file can go missing in genuinely different ways β accidentally deleted, moved somewhere you don't remember, or still sitting right where it should be but no longer opening correctly because part of its data got damaged. βLostβ and βcorruptedβ get used interchangeably, but they point to different causes and different chances of getting the file back.
What determines whether a file is actually recoverable is mostly about what's happened to that space on the drive since it went missing β which is why the earlier you notice and the less you do to the drive in the meantime, the better your odds tend to be.
Signs of what you're actually dealing with
- A file simply isn't where you expect it, but you haven't seen any error opening other files
- A file is there, but won't open, or opens with garbled content or an error
- The file was on a drive that had a recent power loss, disconnect, or crash while it was in use
- You've kept using the PC and saving new files since noticing it was missing
How serious is it?
Usually minor
A single missing or misbehaving file, caught early, is often more recoverable than it feels.
Worth taking seriously
Continuing to save new files to the same drive while you're trying to recover something can work against you β worth being cautious about what you do next rather than treating it as business as usual.
Why βlostβ and βcorruptedβ need different approaches
A missing file and a damaged one call for genuinely different next steps, and using the wrong approach β or continuing to use the drive heavily in the meantime β can reduce your actual chances of getting the file back, even with good intentions.
The steadier path is figuring out which situation you're actually in, and what's still safe to do on that drive, before taking action. Reading that correctly for your specific file and guiding what comes next is what WindowsHelper is being built to do.
