What a passkey actually is, and how it differs from a password

A passkey is a newer way to sign in that's tied to your specific device and something about you — a fingerprint, a face, or a device PIN — rather than something you type from memory. When it doesn't work, the cause is usually about that device-and-you check not being confirmed, not about the credential itself being “wrong” the way a mistyped password would be.

Because it works fundamentally differently from a password, a passkey problem can look at first like an ordinary sign-in failure, but the underlying reason is usually something about the specific device or the way it's currently set up, not a typo.

You're prompted for a passkey, but nothing happens when you try to use it
A message says a passkey isn't found or available on this device

A failed passkey attempt on its own doesn't put the account at risk — it's a sign-in hiccup, not a security compromise.

Worth taking seriously

Is a passkey less secure if it's not working right now?

No — a passkey failing to work doesn't weaken the account's security, it just means that particular sign-in attempt isn't going through.

Can I still get into my account if the passkey fails?

Often yes, if another sign-in method is available for that account — though it's worth knowing ahead of time what backup options actually exist rather than discovering it mid-lockout.

Why does a passkey work on one device but not another?

Passkeys are generally tied closely to the specific device they were set up on, so a device not having that same setup is a common and expected reason it wouldn't work there.

Do I lose the passkey if I get a new PC?

It depends on how the passkey was set up and whether it's backed up anywhere — this is worth checking specifically, since the answer isn't the same in every setup.
