What 'slow Wi-Fi speed' actually measures

Your Wi-Fi connection has a negotiated link speed — how fast your PC and your router are actually talking to each other — separate from your internet plan's speed and separate from whether the connection stays up at all. Slow Wi-Fi speed means that link itself is running well below what it should, even though you're connected, staying connected, and have internet access.

This is different from Wi-Fi that drops or won't connect, and different from general browsing slowness that can happen even over a wired connection — this is specifically about the wireless link's own speed being weaker than it should be, which is its own narrower thing to pin down.
