Cloud Services & Sync Issues

What's actually happening when files won't sync

Cloud sync tools — OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, and others — are constantly comparing what's on the PC to what's stored online, and any mismatch in that comparison (a locked file, a conflicting edit, a slow connection, a full storage quota) can stall the whole process. The tricky part is that a single stuck file can block others behind it, so the outward symptom ("sync isn't working") often has nothing to do with the file someone's actually staring at.

It gets more tangled when more than one cloud service is running at once, since they can quietly compete for the same files or folders without either one clearly saying so.

When sync problems tend to appear

Why "just sign out and back in" isn't always enough

That fixes a narrow set of causes — mainly account or connection issues — but does nothing for a file conflict, a quota problem, or two services fighting over the same folder. Applied to the wrong cause, it just resets the same standoff a few minutes later.

WindowsHelper is being designed to look at which of these very different failure types actually matches what's happening, rather than offering the same reset-and-hope step for every kind of sync failure.

Common questions

Why does only one file get stuck syncing while everything else works?
A single locked, conflicting, or oversized file can block everything queued behind it, even though the rest of the account is syncing normally.
