Server & Network Administration

Who this category is really for
This is sysadmin-level territory — Active Directory, DNS and DHCP servers, Group Policy, print servers, IIS, failover clustering. It's meaningfully different from the rest of the site: instead of one person and one PC, the problems here usually affect a whole network of people and machines at once, and a mistake can ripple out to everyone connected to that server, not just the person troubleshooting it.
It also assumes a different starting point — familiarity with how a Windows Server environment is structured — that most of the other categories on this site don't require.
When these problems tend to show up
- After changes to Group Policy or Active Directory that need to propagate out to many machines
- When setting up or reconfiguring core network services like DNS or DHCP for an organization
- During growth — adding more users, devices, or locations than the current setup was built for
Why a small mistake here has a much bigger blast radius
A misconfigured DHCP or DNS server, or a badly scoped Group Policy change, doesn't just affect one PC — it can knock dozens or hundreds of devices offline at once, which is why server-level troubleshooting deserves more caution than a single-PC fix.
WindowsHelper is being built to be explicit about which changes affect just one machine versus an entire network, so guidance that's appropriate for a whole organization is never confused with a single-PC fix.
