Why a Bluetooth headset's microphone is a separate problem from its audio

A Bluetooth headset actually uses two different modes depending on what it's doing — one built for high-quality music playback, and a different one that carries a microphone signal alongside audio for calls. Windows and the headset have to agree on which mode to use, and when that handoff doesn't happen correctly, you can end up with sound playing perfectly fine while the microphone is completely silent, or picked up at very poor quality.

That's why “the headset works but the mic doesn't” is one of the most common versions of this problem — it's not that the microphone is broken, it's that the connection never switched into the mode that actually carries a microphone signal at all.
