What BIOS and UEFI actually are

BIOS — and UEFI, its modern replacement — is the very first software that runs the instant your PC powers on, before Windows loads at all. It lives on the motherboard itself, separate from Windows entirely, and its job is to wake up the hardware and hand control over to Windows to begin starting up. It has its own settings screen, reachable only in the brief moments right after powering on, completely separate from anything inside Windows.

This is broader than any one specific protection your firmware might handle — it covers a wide range of low-level settings, from which drive the PC starts from to how it recognizes connected hardware, and problems can live in any part of that surface rather than one narrow corner of it.
