Fix Windows 11 24H2 Windows Hello and Biometric Failures
Last updated: September 21, 2025
Reset PIN, re-enroll fingerprints, fix facial recognition, repair biometric services, and configure alternative sign-in methods after the 24H2 update.
Not sure this is your exact issue? Every WindowsHelper guide is scoped to one specific problem — not a generic troubleshooting checklist — so if the title above matches what you're seeing, this is the right guide.
What's going on with Windows Hello after 24H2
Windows Hello — the sign-in that recognises your face or fingerprint instead of a typed password — relies on a chain of small pieces working together: the sensor itself, the service that talks to it, and the record it keeps of your enrolled face or finger. A major Windows update like 24H2 can disturb any link in that chain, which is why fingerprint or face sign-in can suddenly refuse to recognise you even though nothing about your face or finger changed.
It's specific to this kind of update because 24H2 changed enough underlying pieces that biometric sign-in is one of the features most commonly caught out by the transition — and different PCs can be affected in different ways depending on their exact hardware.
How to tell it's this
- Face or fingerprint sign-in stopped working right around the time you got the 24H2 update
- The sensor doesn't respond at all, or repeatedly fails to recognise you
- You're dropped back to typing your PIN or password every time
- It worked fine before the update with the same face or same finger
How serious is it?
Usually minor
Biometric sign-in breaking is inconvenient, not risky — your PIN or password still gets you in, and your account and files are unaffected.
Worth taking seriously
If you're also locked out of your PIN or password, that's a different, more urgent situation worth treating separately from a biometric-only failure.
Why re-enrolling isn't always the answer
The instinctive fix is to just re-register your face or finger, and sometimes that's exactly right — but if the update disturbed the service or the sensor itself rather than your enrollment, re-registering changes nothing and you're stuck again.
The efficient path is working out which part of the chain the update actually disrupted on your specific PC, then fixing that link rather than guessing. Diagnosing which stage broke and guiding the matching fix is what WindowsHelper is being built to do.
