What stick drift actually is, and why it happens

Stick drift is when a controller's analog stick registers movement even though your thumb isn't touching it, usually because the physical sensor inside the stick wears down over time from ordinary use and starts reporting a slightly-off resting position as if it were input. A deadzone is a related but different concept — a small buffer Windows or a game ignores around the stick's center specifically to prevent minor, unintended movement from registering as real input.
