๐ป Fix Gaming on Laptops

Optimize laptop gaming performance, thermals, hybrid graphics, and power management
Not sure this is your exact issue? Every WindowsHelper guide is scoped to one specific problem โ not a generic troubleshooting checklist โ so if the title above matches what you're seeing, this is the right guide.
Why gaming performance on a laptop has extra moving parts
A gaming laptop usually has two graphics processors built in โ a small, efficient one for everyday use and a more powerful one meant for demanding tasks like games โ and Windows has to correctly decide which one a given game actually uses. On top of that, a laptop manages power and heat very differently depending on whether it's plugged in or running on battery, and both of those decisions can quietly limit how a game performs, even on capable hardware.
This is broader than CPU throttling or general overheating on their own โ those can each be one piece of what's limiting a laptop's gaming performance, but a laptop specifically also has the graphics-switching and power side of things that a desktop simply doesn't need to deal with.
Signs it's laptop-specific factors at play
- The same game performs noticeably better plugged in than on battery
- Performance is worse than the laptop's specs suggest it should be, especially compared to a similar desktop
- It changed after switching power modes, or without you touching any game settings
- The laptop gets hot and loud quickly, faster than it seems like it should for the game running
How serious is it?
Usually minor
Some difference in performance between plugged-in and battery use is completely normal and expected โ that trade-off is built into how laptops manage power.
Worth taking seriously
A large, sudden drop in gaming performance with nothing else changed is worth understanding, since it usually points to something specific rather than the laptop simply reaching its limits.
Why 'just plug it in' isn't the whole story
Being plugged in solves the power-limit half of the equation, but it doesn't guarantee the game is actually using the more powerful graphics processor, or that heat isn't still capping performance underneath โ so a laptop can be plugged in and still underperform for a completely different reason.
Working out which of these laptop-specific factors is actually limiting your gaming performance, rather than assuming it's just about being plugged in, is what WindowsHelper is being built to help sort out.
