What GPU visual artifacts actually are

Visual artifacts are wrong information showing up on your screen that has nothing to do with what any app is actually trying to display — colored blocks, torn textures, flickering lines, or stray dots that don't belong. It happens when what your graphics card sends to the screen doesn't match what it was supposed to send, somewhere between the card processing an image and it reaching your display.

This is different from a laptop's backlight flickering or brightness pulsing, which is about the screen's own light rather than the image itself, and from a graphics driver update breaking specific games — artifacts can show up anywhere, including the desktop and browser, and don't require a recent driver change to appear.

How to recognize visual artifacts

Common questions

Does this mean my graphics card is dying?
Not necessarily — plenty of artifacts trace back to a driver or a display connection rather than failing hardware. Persistent artifacts, especially outside of Windows entirely, point more toward hardware than a driver or connection would.
Why does it only happen in some apps and not others?
Different apps push the graphics card in different ways, so trouble that only appears under heavier load may not show up in lighter, everyday use — that's a useful clue about how demanding a load it takes to trigger.
Could my monitor or cable be the problem instead of my PC?
Yes — artifacts can start at the cable or the display itself rather than the graphics card. Trying the same PC with a different cable or monitor is one of the more telling comparisons you can make.
Is it safe to keep using my PC like this?
