Fix HEIC/HEIF Photos Not Opening on Windows
Last updated: October 1, 2025
Open iPhone HEIC/HEIF photos on Windows by installing the free HEIF codec, converting to JPG, changing iPhone transfer settings, or using IrfanView.
Overview
iPhone photos won't open on Windows? This guide adds HEIC support via free codec, teaches batch conversion, and shows how to make iPhone always send JPG.
What HEIC/HEIF photos are and why Windows can trip on them
HEIC (and its close relative HEIF) is a newer photo format many phones — iPhones especially — save pictures in by default, because it packs the same image into a smaller file than older, more universal formats. Windows can display these photos, but only when it recognizes this particular file type; when it doesn’t, the photo shows up as an unrecognized file, a blank thumbnail, or simply won’t open, rather than showing a broken or garbled image.
Because these photos usually arrive on a PC by being copied over, backed up, or sent as an attachment rather than taken on the PC itself, whether one opens can depend on how it got there as much as on the photo itself.
How to tell you’re dealing with this specific format
- The file’s name ends in .heic or .heif
- The photo came from an iPhone or another recent phone, rather than being taken on the PC
- The thumbnail is blank or a generic icon while other photos on the same PC show previews fine
- It opens on the phone (or in some apps on the PC) but not in others
How serious is it?
Usually minor
The photo itself isn’t damaged or lost — this is about Windows recognizing the file type, not about what’s in it.
Worth taking seriously
If you regularly receive photos in this format and need to open or share many of them, it’s worth understanding the format situation rather than handling each file one at a time.
Why converting one photo at a time doesn’t address the real gap
Converting a single stuck photo can make that one open, but if the underlying reason Windows isn’t recognizing this format is still there, the very next photo from the same phone runs into the identical wall — so the “fix” has to be repeated endlessly rather than actually resolved.
Understanding whether the gap is about this format not being recognized broadly, or something narrower affecting just one file, is what WindowsHelper is being built to help you tell apart.
