Why a file can behave differently depending on where it was made

A file created on one device or app doesn't always open the same way somewhere else, even when the file extension looks identical — different platforms and apps can save the same general file type in slightly different ways, use features another platform doesn't fully support, or expect fonts, formatting, or codecs that aren't present everywhere.
