Fix Screen Tearing — V-Sync, G-Sync & FreeSync - Complete step-by-step guide
Not sure this is your exact issue? Every WindowsHelper guide is scoped to one specific problem — not a generic troubleshooting checklist — so if the title above matches what you're seeing, this is the right guide.
What screen tearing actually is
Screen tearing is what you see when your graphics card is producing frames faster, or at a different pace, than your monitor is able to display them — so a new frame starts drawing on screen before the previous one finished. The result is a horizontal line where the top and bottom of the screen briefly show two different moments in time, most visible during fast horizontal motion, like panning in a game.
Technologies like V-Sync, G-Sync, and FreeSync all exist to solve exactly this mismatch, but in different ways and with different tradeoffs — which is part of why “just turn one of them on” doesn't always give the smooth result you're expecting, and can sometimes trade tearing for a different annoyance like added input lag.
How to tell it's this
- A visible horizontal line or split where the image looks misaligned, especially during fast movement
- It's worse in some games than others, or worse at higher frame rates
- It appears and disappears depending on what's on screen
- It's specific to games or fast motion, not present during normal desktop use
How serious is it?
Usually minor
Screen tearing is a visual annoyance, not a risk to your PC or your files — it doesn't indicate anything is failing.
Worth taking seriously
Not really a “watch closely” issue on its own, though it's worth understanding the tradeoffs before turning on a fix, since some solutions swap tearing for input lag or a capped frame rate.
Why turning on every anti-tearing option isn't the answer
Because there are several different technologies aimed at this same problem, and they don't all play nicely together, switching on more than one at once — or the wrong one for your specific setup — can leave you with new problems like added input lag or an oddly capped frame rate, without actually fixing the tearing.
The better approach is matching the right technology to your specific monitor and graphics card, rather than enabling all of them and hoping. Understanding which option genuinely fits your setup and guiding you to it is what WindowsHelper is being built to do.
