What’s actually going on when a video won’t play right

Video files aren’t one simple format — they’re built from a video part and often a separate audio part, each packaged (“encoded”) using one of several different methods called codecs. Your PC needs to recognize and support whichever codec a specific video was made with in order to play it properly. When it doesn’t, you get a black screen with sound, a picture with no sound, choppy playback, or a video that won’t open at all — different symptoms depending on exactly which part of the file your PC can’t handle.

Because there are many different codecs in use, and different apps support different subsets of them, the exact same video file can play perfectly in one app or on one PC and fail in another — which is confusing until you know that’s genuinely how it works.
