Read Mac-Formatted Drives (APFS/HFS+) on Windows
Overview
Plugged in a Mac drive and Windows cant read it? Access APFS and HFS+ files with free and paid tools.
What it means when a drive is formatted for Mac, not Windows
This is a different situation from a drive that Windows never notices at all. Here, the drive shows up: it appears in File Explorer, sometimes even with a name and a size, but double-clicking it does nothing, or Windows offers to format it before you can use it. That's usually because the drive was formatted on a Mac, using a filesystem called APFS or HFS+, instead of the ones Windows understands, NTFS or exFAT.
Windows can tell that a drive is there and roughly how big it is, but it doesn't know how to read the specific way a Mac-formatted drive organizes its files, so it can't open what's actually stored on it. Nothing about the drive itself is damaged; the two systems are just speaking a different filesystem language.
How to tell it's a formatting mismatch, not a connection problem
- The drive appears in File Explorer, with a name, drive letter, or size showing
- Double-clicking it does nothing, or gives an error instead of opening
- Windows offers to format the drive before you can use it
- The same drive opens normally when connected to a Mac
How serious is it?
Usually minor
A Mac-formatted drive showing up but not opening is a low-risk mismatch, not a sign of damage; your files are very likely intact and just unreadable from this specific PC.
Worth taking seriously
If you're tempted to accept Windows' offer to format the drive, stop first. Formatting would erase what's on it, and that's rarely the right first move just to read what's there.
Why formatting the drive is the wrong first move
When Windows offers to format a drive it can't open, it sounds like the fix, but it's really just Windows' generic response to any drive it doesn't understand, whether the real cause is a Mac filesystem, something else entirely, or nothing serious at all. Accepting that offer erases the files before anyone's confirmed what's actually going on.
Reading what's on a Mac-formatted drive from a Windows PC doesn't have to mean erasing it first, but only once you've confirmed a filesystem mismatch really is the cause rather than guessing. That's exactly the kind of check WindowsHelper is being built to walk you through before anything on the drive gets touched.
