Fix FPS Drops While Streaming
Last updated: March 25, 2025
Losing frames while you stream? Switch to GPU encoding, lighten OBS and in-game settings, tune the encoder and audio, or move to a two-PC streaming setup.
Not sure this is your exact issue? Every WindowsHelper guide is scoped to one specific problem — not a generic troubleshooting checklist — so if the title above matches what you're seeing, this is the right guide.
Why streaming can tank your frame rate even on a capable PC
Streaming asks your PC to do an entirely second job at the same time as running your game — capturing what's on screen, compressing it, and sending it out, continuously, without missing a beat. That second job competes for the same resources your game is using, and when it wins too much of that competition, your game's frame rate drops even though the PC would handle the game just fine on its own.
Because streaming and gaming are pulling on the same limited resources from two different directions, the actual bottleneck can differ from PC to PC — some struggle with the encoding work itself, others with everything happening at once — which is why generic streaming advice doesn't fit everyone equally.
How to tell it's this
- The game runs smoothly when you're not streaming, but drops frames as soon as you start
- Frame drops happen specifically during demanding moments in the game while streaming
- Viewers report the stream itself looking choppy even though your gameplay feels fine
- It's fine on some games but struggles on more demanding ones while streaming
How serious is it?
Usually minor
FPS drops only while streaming are a performance-balancing issue, not a sign anything is broken — your PC is simply being asked to do two demanding things at once.
Worth taking seriously
Not a risk-to-your-PC situation, though if it's a scheduled or live stream, it's worth sorting ahead of time rather than discovering the drop live.
Why lowering game settings alone doesn't always solve it
Turning down the game's own graphics settings is the instinctive fix, and it can help if the game itself was the bottleneck — but if the actual strain is coming from the streaming and capture side rather than the game's rendering, lowering game settings barely moves the needle.
The more effective path is working out whether the game, the streaming and encoding process, or the balance between the two is actually where your PC is struggling — then addressing that specific pressure point. Reading where the real strain is on your setup is what WindowsHelper is being built to do.
