Fix Game Not Launching or Black Screen
Last updated: February 24, 2025
Game won't start or shows a black screen? Covers runtime libraries, game file repair, GPU drivers, anti-cheat, launcher problems, overlays and bad mods.
Not sure this is your exact issue? Every WindowsHelper guide is scoped to one specific problem — not a generic troubleshooting checklist — so if the title above matches what you're seeing, this is the right guide.
What it means when a game opens to nothing or a black screen
This is a different moment than a game crashing partway through play — here, you launch the game and instead of the menu or the world loading, you get a black screen, a window that never fills in, or nothing visibly happens at all, even though the game might be running in the background. Windows itself is fine in this situation; it's specifically this one game that isn't reaching the point of actually displaying anything.
Because the game can be technically running — sometimes showing up in the task list — while displaying nothing, the cause tends to sit in how the game is trying to show itself on your screen, rather than the game failing outright the way a crash does.
How this differs from a mid-game crash or a Windows-wide black screen
- The game shows in the taskbar or task list as running, but the screen stays black or blank
- Alt-tabbing away and back changes what you see, or audio plays with no picture
- The rest of Windows and other apps are completely normal at the same time
- It happens specifically when launching this game, not tied to a recent Windows update
How serious is it?
Usually minor
A single game not displaying anything on launch is contained to that game — the rest of your PC is unaffected.
Worth taking seriously
If it's paired with the whole screen going black outside the game too, or it happened right after a Windows update, that's a different situation worth treating separately from this one.
Why generic display troubleshooting misses what's specific here
General display-fix advice is written for Windows-wide screen problems, but a single game not showing anything while everything else on the PC displays fine is a narrower situation — broad display troubleshooting can send you down steps meant for a different kind of problem entirely.
Working out why this specific game isn't reaching the screen — rather than treating it like a general display fault — and guiding the fix that actually matches is what WindowsHelper is being built to do.
